After having done install desktop environment from tasksel, I ran orca --text-setup in the speakup environment and after setup was finished was told orca couldn't connect to the desktop because the DISPLAY variable was not set. I don't know if debian ought to have set this variable somewhere in earlier installation process or not so this may not be a bug. What I would like to know is what I can do about it now and get the variable set correctly. I don't figure to go beyond vga on the video and have a radian diamond flat screen monitor along with an nvidia CK804 video card to support it.
