Test your assumption, once you log in, you could put a line in the 
bottom of /etc/rc.local once rc.local had been made executable to play a 
sound.  That file is the last thing to be run before the login prompt 
comes up.  You may find /usr/share/sounds/kde/startup2.wav available and 
/usr/bin/speaker-test /usr/share/sounds/kde/startup2.wav in 
/etc/rc.local as its last line ought to at least let you know when it's 
time to login.
