Hi,

I tried running /usr/bin/speaker-test with various .wav files on my system and
all I get is white noise, not any kind of recognizable sounds.

Test your assumption, once you log in, you could put a line in the bottom of
/etc/rc.local once rc.local had been made executable to play a sound. That
file is the last thing to be run before the login prompt comes up. You may
find /usr/share/sounds/kde/startup2.wav available and /usr/bin/speaker-test
/usr/share/sounds/kde/startup2.wav in /etc/rc.local as its last line ought to
at least let you know when it's time to login.
