To check, I have built a Slint mini ISO replacing probe_sound_cards by S38espeakup in the initrd, with lines 6 and 83 commented out as we ship all speakup drivers built in the kernel in Slint's installer. This time espeakup started as expected so I assume that the issue doesn't come from S38espeakup but rather from something occurring before running it in the Debian installer's startup sequence.
