We plan to reportbug to evince maintainer, but I think the support of
a11y team is useful tu help upstream devs or maintainers of the package
to track the problem. Otehrwise, atril may be the appropriate choixe for
future debian releases where we want to have pdf readable.

If you are able to also report this bug upstream, please do so.

Done as https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evince/-/issues/2136, and I also set the forwarded address on the Debian bug [1].

It was a huge project for Papers to support the orca screen reader.
The UI for Papers is written in Rust so it's not directly helpful to
Evince which doesn't use Rust.

I would think that although it's not gonna be a mere copy & paste, it's actually likely to help a lot in how it can be achieved, even if the actual implementation would have to be adjusted. It might make a very hard work for the Evince developers into something fairly accessible (pun intended :)) But that would ultimately be for whoever finds time and will to work on this to say.

Colomban
