Just an FYI (sorry to the person who responded, I lost your message). It appears that the second DIMM slot on the motherboard is faulty. Why this would cause the machine to freeze at the *exact* same point is beyond me, but now that the DIMM that was in it has gone, debian is installing perfectly!
