*Update*

Retried using "boot: install console=/dev/ttyS0,9600" instead of just "boot: install". NOW IT WORKS!!

Kernel boot messages say;

console handover: boot [earlyprom0] -> real [ttyS0]
... instead of ...
console handover: boot [earlyprom0] -> real [tty0]

BUT why should I need to specify that that the console should be on /dev/ttyS0 when that is where I am already connected to? And why is this behaviour different from 'Etch'?

Is there any further diagnostic information that I can provide to assist understanding of this issue?

Regards,
Alan.
