I just performed a successful re-install of Etch and what jumps out at me is that / (root) was placed on the sda3 partition while sda2 represents the entire logical or extended partition.
In previous failed attempts I do recall seeing / (root) placed on /sda2 which leads me to wonder if, in those cases, there was a conflict which resulted in the partitions not being read correctly.
