I've got the second system on which the squeeze installer does not
work.  This time it's a system with a Asus P6X58D-E board.  The kernel
appears to boot normally, but the USB keyboard is not recognized, key
presses have no effect.

Have you got any suggestions how to debug this and turn it into a
meaningful installation report?

Installing lenny and upgrading worked for me the last time.  I'll see
if it does the trick this time, too.
