Package: cdrom
version : debian-installer etch beta 1
I would like to report a bug with the debian-installer etch beta 1
while installing the kernel 2.6.12 for i386
If this is not the proper place to report that bug, thanks for telling
me where to report it.
the target hardware is Sun Cobalt LX50 with ide cdrom
When installing debian testing using the netinst CD
(debian-testing-i386-netinst.iso), after choosing the language and
keyboard layout, the installer is trying to detect hardware to find
cdrom (loading module AIC7XXX : for a long time)
Then I get an error message
= = = = =
Detect and mount CDROM
Error while running 'modprobe -v ide-generic'
No CDROM drive was detected
= = = = =
if I change terminal and type 'ls /dev'
there is no trace of /dev/cdrom or /dev/hda
On another identical Sun hardware running sarge with kernel 2.6.8, the
cdrom is /dev/cdrom ->/dev/hda
The workaround I found was to first install etch with a 2.4 kernel then
the cdrom is detected ok. After installation is complete, I upgraded to
the 2.6.12 kernel with aptitude.
If any futher tests are needed, I will be happy to help.
Best regards

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful
The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.
In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.
You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.
If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.
Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
