Package: Installation-reports
Version: testing
Using Etch CD image (version 2.6.??). The installer correctly found the
Atmel based pcmcia wireless card and proceeded to install the drivers.
However, it put the files in the wrong places. The specific problems
were: firmware.agent needs to be in ?? /etc ?? ( ... typing this bug
report from memory ...) and not where the installer put it, and all the
atmel drivers need to be in ?? /etc/firmware/hotplug ?? not in some
other directory.
Fortunately, this was a repeat installation for me (hard drive crash on
older laptop...) so I was familiar with the steps required to make the
fix. I simply copied firmware.agent to the right subdirectory, "mkdir"
/hotplug/firmware (or is it the other way around?), and copied atmel* to
this new subdirectory, added a "sys line" (as described by
thekellys.org) to /etc/initab, and rebooted. Viola! We have
connectivity! And its off to the races! (I also have to issue the
following manually, but plan to automate it: )
# iwconfig eth0 essid any
# dhclient eth0
Nothing complicated like recompiling or anything, just copy the given
files to the proper place. Other than this snag, the installation went
like clockwork, GREAT job!
Let me know if you want/need more specifics, and I'll write it all down
when I get back on the laptop at home.
Rob

We are closing this installation report for one of the following
reasons:
- it was reported with a pre-lenny version of Debian
Installer.
- indications in the installation report give the feeling that
the reported problem waslying in another software, unrelated to
D-I, which we can't easily identify.
- indications in the installation report suggest that it may have been
fixed in a more recent version of a D-I component
- it was successful and we forgot closing it..:-)
- it has no information we consider useful
The D-I team is currently in the process of cleaning out the old spool
of installation reports that haven't bene processed yet.
In case you think that the problem you reported has chances to be
still present, please reiterate your installation test with
a more recent image of D-I, if you're in position of doing this.
You'll find daily builds at
http://www.debian.org/devel/debian-installer. We recommend you choose
the netboot image, in the "daily builds section", then choose to
install "squeeze" when prompted.
If some problems are found, please report them with a new bug sent
against installation-reports.
Many thanks for your understanding and your help improving Debian,
past and present.
