Package: Debian 5.0 CD
I downloaded the Debian 5.0 CD from the internet. I rebooted on the CD
and installed the complete system. Everything works fine as a regular
user. Next I tried to install, update, etc. system items and of course
needed to be root. I tried to login as root in XWindow environment, but
would not allow me. On installation of the package it asked if I wanted
to login as root, I said YES.
I had talked to someone else before via e-mail from, I guess Debian, he
told me, it was not Debian itself, it was the project group that did
the outer shell the kernel used. Well, If I downloaded it from here,
and I'm talking to the the people where I got the CD, I believe I found
my source.
I've heard enough arguments about logging in as root in "X". Simply,
when you're doing a number of things as root, either you don't know the
name of the program or don't know all the commands required, which the
GUI talkes care of. When you're a system administrator, you have the
right to login to your own CONSOLE as ROOT under GUI. Someone is
screwing with the code. I believe I can make a decision on my own
system about ROOT use.

So the installation part was successful, great.

It is a default GDM configuration that you can change by typing
'gdmsetup'.

You should use su or gksu for performing specifing operation using a GUI.
