I have tried to use the files in
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-nonfree_0.28.tar.gz
on a FAT formatted USB stick but when
asked to insert the drivers it wil fail to detect them on this stick.
I have unpacked the file to the root of the stick, creating a /firmware-nonfree
directory. I have copied that directory to /firmware and copied the relevant
files to
/firmware and /bnx2 as well.
I can install Etch without a problem on this machine, have done so several
times, I can then upgrade to lenny providing I first add the non-free
repository.
Steps in a Squeeze AMD64 installation
Boot from CD
Select Install (not the graphic install)
Language English
Country Netherlands
Locale setting en_US.UTF-8
keymap American English
The installer will look for the CD and find it
It will then load aditional components
It will then detect network hardware
At this point it will report a missing file bnx2/bnx2-mips-06-5.0.0.j3.fw
I insert the USB stick, it wil be available as /dev/sdc with the vfat partition
as /dev/sdc1
I CAN:
- Open a second console
- mkdir /mnt/usb
- mount /dev/sdc1 /mn/usb
- ls /mnt/usb
and see alle relevant files on the stick. So the installer is able to see the
files on the stock as far as I can tell.
After not finding the bnx2/bnx2-mips-06-5.0.0.j3.fw file it wil now look for
the bnx2-rv2p-06-5.0.0.j3.fw file.
I do not know if this is a feature or a bug as well in the AMD64 installation.
I have almost the same error trying to install from an i386 Netinst CD but it
will search for the bnx2/bnx2-rv2p-06-5.0.0.j3.fw file the first time.
I have prepared this report bug on my machine at home. If you want a relevant
hardware list I can install Etch on the machine with the problem and upgrade to
Lenny and
after that to Squeeze if needed from which I can the use reportbug to add the
relevant hardware info if needed.
In that case please tell me which command to run or which file to add to the
report.
