Sound like a kernel error (I don't belive this), or broken hardware:
memory (happens often todays, with cheapest DRAM), CPU (to hot, crappy
coolers) or chipset (lowcost crap). Please test your memory with
memtest86 or so(http://freshmeat.net/projects/memtest86/) and report
success or failure.

Sound even more like defective memory or IDE-Controler.
