I assume that the problem is due to drm (direct rendering management). I tried Knoppix (kernel 3.0.4) and got the same problem until I set the cheatcode "nodrm". Then Knoppix worked well. So it might be good if the Debian installer could disable drm. Best wishes Oliver
If you suspect the cause can be a kernel module you can try to blacklist [1] it to avoid being loaded.
