For those of you doing automatic installs via preseed on both physical and virtual machines, you might want to try this workaround instead: d-i partman/early_command string debconf-set grub-installer/choose_bootdev "$(echo /dev/[sv]d[a-z])" -- bye, pabs https://wiki.debian.org/PaulWise
