Unlike Jan-Benedict, I have been able to format my root partition (500 MB) without any problems. My overall experience wasn't much better, though. I've never been able to complete debootstrap. I ran it by hand and there are quite reproducible seg faults when installing packages (the gzip -c process dies, I don't have the exact message here). Also, I see random freezes. However, I'm not sure this is the kernel or my hardware. (I think the NetBSD on my machine freezes too from time to time, so I suspect the hardware.
