Comments/Problems:
I tried three cycles of plain installation on /hda5
1. Try
The CD booted and I got the intro screen (which is very nice)
As it told me nothing, I waited for a while for something to happen.
As nothing happend, I just hit return and installation started.
I skip the first questions, they seemed to work fine.
The computer is in a local network behind a firewall and we have no DHCP.
DHCP discover worked fine with no results (just as it should).
The I was asked for the address of the computer, the netmask, the
firewall/router and nameserver. Nice: The router address was taken for the
nameserver, too, and I just had to hit return. Then installation found my
computer name and my domain - nice, too.
A real problem where the partitions:
No, I did not want to change anything! - Hmm. go out here.
Then it began to be confusing. I notieced this would not work as the
installation program told me, it could not install. - How could it, if it does
not ask me where?
back forward, back, back... Noticed way for that depends oin how often done or
something else. It is not going back the same way where I came from.
It took a while, until I noticed: I had to tell the partitionig part of
installation, that I really wanted an ext2fs used as ext2fs to get a new option
where to mount.
That part should really be revised! I did not expect that and only tried that
because I had to do something even if it seemed to be silly to tell the
program, that ext2fs is ext2fs.
Next problem was grub:
I did not want to be my working lilo to be erased, seems to be paranoid,
but it was only a test installation. In IRC I was told just to skip all
questions. Okay. I said no to grup, but then it asked me where to install. And
now?
There was only a back, no forward, no skip.
This was the point, I remember seeing the menu first or second time, when I
choosed "back".
I did not try lilo first time. And decided to end up.
Then (or elsewher I was asked which kernel to take: 2.6 or 2.4) I decided 2.6.
This first time rebooting did not work.
I tried to find out how to change my lilo. conf and did not get it: Loeding
kernel... That was all or even a black screan.
The computer has no real power off switch and twice I could not get it off els
as with disconnecting from power.
I tried installation tree times. with the same beginning: Hitting return on the
intro screen:
- Depending on my way (back or not back) through the installation things where
different. As I did not decide anything diffferent, shouldn't that be always
the same?
- Seems I should have seen something like "Hit F1 for help" This was not
visible on my tft
- Why did the installation ask me not every time for the kernel to take?
Not getting the computer boot the system, I made a try then, using grub. Now I
got it to boot and complete the installation. But problems with my TFT.
Some other things related to my tft (or not?):
The screen resolution was not always the same. Had to adjust setting for two or
three.
Some ideas:
What about a help on every installation part?
Give some text please at teh beginning, that there is a menu, the user may be
proptet to, if necessary
Couln't a lilo.conf always be installed (a working one for a dual system would
be fine (I did not find one and that of my old notebook is lost)?
There is no desktop in the list of tasks, should be, even if without X
At least I got sarge booting with my lilo now ( I can giive the config, if
wanted)
I am missing some things in base installation:
ssh is not installed
telnet is installed :-(
less is not installed
sudo ist not installed, must not?
Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.
