modconf 0.2.42 on a fresh Woody install upgraded to kernel 2.4.18 I saw exactly the behavior described by the previous poster, on a 132-column display. When I rebooted to a 24x80 console, modconf functioned perfectly. This looks like bug #138363 against whiptail.
