the choice of network management could fall to ifupdown, NetworkManager, systemd-networkd or networking.service.
or Netplan, starting from trixie. networking.service = ifupdown
Is systemd the current service configuration setup?
Yes.
Is systemd-networkd the current network methodology or even a preferred one?
Not currently. ifupdown is the default, and NetworkManager is set up if installed (usually pulled by desktop environment dependencies). Starting with trixie, Netplan configuration is also supported if installed during the initial and may use either NetworkManager or systemd-networkd as backend.
