As seen on openQA [1] in bootwalk_2:2 and bootwalk_2:5 the automated install appears to hang.

When locally running the netinst installer, it turned out that the output is sent to /dev/ttyAMA0 instead of the console [2]. So the installer is running and continuing until the question to provide the preseed file, but the user cannot see the question.

I've tried some debugging and managed to make the gtk version work to providing 'TERM_FRAMEBUFFER_TRY=yes' on the boot command line. That make Xorg run and then the progress could be seen.

However, that was not the correct solution for the text version of the automated install.

It looks like the value for DEBIAN_FRONTEND is not set or set at some other moment. But only when the automated install is running...

I don't know how to debug further.
