Dear Debian Installer Development Team, I would like to suggest adding an on-screen keyboard to the Debian Graphical Installer.
This would be particularly useful for devices such as tablets, 2-in-1 computers, touchscreen PCs, and other systems where a physical keyboard may not be available or may not work during installation. I recently encountered this issue while installing Debian on a touchscreen tablet. The touchscreen itself was usable, but there was no on-screen keyboard available in the graphical installer. As a result, I could not enter essential information such as the username, password, hostname, partitioning details, or other text fields without connecting an external physical keyboard. An integrated on-screen keyboard would make Debian significantly more accessible on touchscreen-only hardware. Ideally, it could automatically appear when the user selects a text input field, or alternatively be available through a keyboard button in the installer interface. I believe this would be a valuable improvement for: * Touchscreen tablets * 2-in-1 laptops * Devices with detachable keyboards * Systems with broken or unsupported physical keyboards * Accessibility use cases * Headless or specialized hardware where a keyboard is unavailable GNOME and other desktop environments already provide on-screen keyboard solutions, so integrating a lightweight virtual keyboard into the installer could potentially solve this problem without requiring additional hardware.
