[Cc'd to joeyh and taggart for any comments they might want to add.] For section 1.2: (in bastard child of text and HTML)
Debian GNU/Linux now includes preliminary support for the Linux Standard Base 1.1.0 (http://www.linuxbase.org/), which is designed to improve binary compatibility between Linux distributions and provide a common platform for distributors of third-party software (free and otherwise). LSB applications distributed in RPMs can be installed using version 8.00 or later of Debian's alien package (http://kitenet.net/programs/alien/). Debian's LSB support is enabled by installing the lsb package.
