AFAIK, platforms which support IMSM are:
- Intel Matrix Storage Technology (IMST) on SATA - EOL.
- Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) on SATA - EOL.
- Intel Volume Management Device (VMD) on NVMe - current.
- Intel RAID on CPU (VROC) on Xeon + NVMe - current.

Regarding how common it is, the only use cases I can think about are:
- dual boot with Windows on the same drives
- seamless redundant UEFI boot
(...)
Looking at above listed use cases, they look like corner cases or special
situations driven by advanced users/experts.
And these people should be able to manually partition their fakeraid system,
not needing guided partitioning.
Good point. Unless someone wants to do fully automated installation
(also a rare use case).
Since this bug is adressing partman-auto, it only affects guided partitioning,
while manual partitioning is always possible, even if we revert commit
7dfd6208, as you proposed in bug #1146054.
Is this correct?
Yes.
If yes, I think the best solution would be to simply revert commit 7dfd6208 in
partman-auto.
That would still support partitioning of these fakeraid systems in general (via
manual partitioning) and solve the problems mentioned in bug #1146054 (and this
with minimal effort and minimal risk).
If we choose to drop fakeRAID detection, then, as mentioned in the bug
report, we have two options:
- disable automatic partitioning on any md RAID array (breaking some
valid use cases),
- or enable automatic partitioning on any md RAID array (possibly
resulting in a non-bootable system).
