Yeah it might be nice to have a clear message of "Try this if your get a blank screen on booting and are using an LCD display". Maybe some LCD displays just don't handle 640x480 vga mode correctly in some cases (although hard to believe). I don't actually remember ever seeing a message about vga16, but I may have missed it, or it could have been added since the last time I read them all. I would be perfectly happy with a clear message about what to do, since I agree that the UTF support is much more important than a few users of broken displays.
