Please note that in submitting this bug report I intended to report a bug in the Debian install process, regardless of its implementation, rather than in boot-floppies specifically. That's why I reported it for package "install" rather than "boot-floppies". It seems that the bug tracker doesn't distinguish these two possibilities very well; see Bug#174410.
There's been a lot of confusion about this, and for bugs 174348 and 174360 it's led to complaints that I'm asking for major changes to be made in the stable distribution. That's not what I'm asking for at all. I'll be satisfied that these bugs are fixed if these problems simply don't occur with the new "debian-installer" system.
