OK, it's my fault since I am new to Linux and was not too clear on what was being booted. Basically, I had some difficulty getting the dual boot from NT to work properly, and for some reason this machine can't be boot from the USB based floppy. I have been using the install disc to boot the system and mounting them via the rescue command. The disc that I kept using was disc 1, which defaults to 2.2.20-idepci.
Sorry for the false alarm.
