The last messages are PCI: Probing PCI hardware (bus 00) general proteacion fault: 0000 CPU: 0 [ ... and there goes the oops stuff.... ] <0>Kernel panic: Attempted to kill init! Regular sarge snapshot CD boots fine, though the installer freezes later while discovering SCSI controller... Knoppix (based on 2.4.22) works fine on this machine, so basically the hardware is not a problem.
