Hi Robbie, I would recommend to get KNOPPIX available at http://www.knoppix.org -> Download burn that to CD and try booting it.
Knoppix lives out of RAM and won't touch your system unless you tell it to. So you have a chance to see, whether this one runs or not. The symptoms you describe look like a hw problem to me. You did pull all the plugs and put them back? Unplugging the disks and cards and try booting Knoppix to see, whether it works at some point ... Hope this helps.
