KNOPPIX works perfectly, I thought DEBIAN should work as well. 15 GB XFS partition on my 80 GB /dev/hdb drive has been made available. I try the installer, works perfectly until I reach the part where the first time the root partition is mounted. The system is halted, no way to go back and fix the problem, but I still can Alt+F3 and look at the error messages, there is stated that the XFS Kernel modules are not available. (My suggestion, put on the intallation CD image a kernel where EVERY filesystem available to linux is fully supported) Next try: Network setup is somehow fishy this time, 10 sec waiting time for a DHCP Server respond is far too short in my case, my Mandrake 9.2 system waits for 120 s until it stops trying, and most of the time it takes about 20 - 30 sec to get a respond from my provider. At the partitioning part I reformat the partition to be ReiserFS, select some Tasks which I want my system to be able to perform (what I was missing somehow is the multimedia category, maybe even devided into grafics, audio and video - maybe I just overlooked it this early in the morning). But as it is quite similar to my Mandrake install I had no problems, I also think this kind of package selection is the right way to go. Good work done here, really. After this lots of questions were asked, I do not really understand why a hostname is asked from me, because usually I get my hostname from my provider's DHCP server. If this would be my first install or if my provider would assign me a different IP address than usual (which is quite common here in Austria), I would enter a completely wrong hostname because I CANNOT know my hostname at this time (It changes with the IP address). I guess that would mess up the network settings pretty well. Please do not ask unnecessary or redundant questions during install, and this is an unnecessary question. Network is up, so the hostname is known, no need to ask. The biggest problem of all: My graficcard was not detected. I have a ATI XPert 2000, Mandrake knows this card since I use Mandrake, the XFree86 driver for an ATI Rage 128 TV out fits well, even 3D support works (although unstable sometimes, lockup during tuxracer runs). KNOPPIX also detects my graficcard automatically, so maybe you can look there what needs to be done about this. All in all you made good work, all hardware was detected nicely except the graficcard, which is a huge achievement compared to the old installer. However, until this works out of the box I will not use DEBIAN, because I also have to manage my mother's and sister's PC's and I don't dare to change their distro if I haven't gotten some experience on the new distro myself. I can only get experience if I work with that system, and for that I need a grafical desktop (I prefer KDE). I do not want to crawl deep into my system and configure a lot by hand, because I see myself doing that on three computers and then the motivation to change is gone.
