Consequently, I ran the installer with DEBCONF_PRIORITY=medium and skipped the "Partition hard drives" step. It was a little anoying that the installer kept returning to this step even though I had advanced on to the others. I let the installer use lilo as the boot loader. However, I boot several operating systems using GRUB installed on /dev/hdf1. I then manually edited the GRUB configuration file and added Debian as another option. After restoring the Master Boot Record, all of the operating systems were bootable. KDE installed and came up without any problems. I elected to use the autoconfig choices whenever possible. Seems like everything works well on this hardware. Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/.
