It doesn't give a useful error message when the proxy details are wrong, and there doesn't appear to be any way to change them without rebooting. As I didn't know whether it was a DNS, authentication, syntax or some other error, I gave up and used the 100MB netinst CD instead. The machine doesn't automatically reboot (sits there with a blank screen), but I don't know whether the previous Windows installation was able to reboot either.
