When calling from an external tree modules_install, because I 
updated my kernel and recompiled the external module, this 
modules keeps being added in /etc/modules

The Makefile line causing the problem is as follow (meaning its 
the 2.6 kernel itself that calls the module-init-tools binaries...

modules_install: 
        make CC=$(CC) -C $(KERNEL_SOURCES) SUBDIRS=$(MODDIR) modules_install
