The d-i team would like to drop syslinux from the first CD, but am unable to do this because of bug #205379, "debootstrap should not install syslinux". You might want to consider bug #244447, "Should not install libgdbmg1 in woody" as well, as it should get rid of a useless dependnecy and make it possible to make even smaller install CDs. The delay introduced by bug #225742 "the sync after extraction" would also be nice to have fixed soon.
