Herbert, can I get you to comment on this. What happens is this: debian-installer uses devfs, we create some LVM devices and they show up in /dev/. Then, we install the base system into /target, chroot in there to install the kernel. This fails because the LVM devices don't exist in the chroot. So I thought we should just install lvm1 or lvm2 before installing the kernel, but this fails with "VGDA in kernel and lvmtag are NOT consistent".
