Hmmm. That would make sense as the problem seems to occur because fbcon is _not_ loaded after reboot. It looks like with 2.6 I need fbcon for English as well. I have no idea why 2.4 is OK without fbcon during 2nd stage but 2.6 is not. Looks like the font that is loaded after reboot has the wrong character set (no line graphics).
