Did you use a daily image or the beta4?

Yes, the tg3 is currently not in out 2.6 kernel but will be added
again later.

This sounds as if you used beta4.  Can you use a newer image from
http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/sarge_d-i/ and see if that
works?  Maybe GRUB will work there too.
