Why not just get the boot.img.gz from the same directory? I've not heard success or failure with usb memory sticks and d-i for amd64 before, but at least it has the initrd, kernel, and a known working syslinux configuration.
Do you build boot.img.gz for amd64 on i386, using just vmlinuz and initrd.gz of amd64?
