Did you ever get anywhere on this tail problem? Can you still reproduce it?
One possibility is something is creating a new /var/log/messages. busybox tail will not follow to new files. I saw this once when a broken anna re-installed the rootskel udeb, which includes an empty /var/log/messages, but that was code that is not in a released version of anna. But perhaps something similar is going on. -- see shy jo
