1. the module wasn't compiled into the default installed kernel
 2. when I tried to add it - either as module or compiled in - the
option was simply absent from the kernel config.

what kernel source were you buiding from?
i suggest you use the 2.4.26 source direct from kernel.org to build yourself
a new kernel
