Thanks for the reply. Virtual PC doesn't do any emulating at all - except for the hard drive which is contained in a dynamically sized file.
I was able to access the net using gentoo's liveCD 2004.1 with the smp (2.6.5) kernel, but installing gentoo is such a long process that i gave it up.
