The segmentation fault is an indication of something really bad happening in the kernel or one of the kernel modules it tries to load. I find that my A40 is supported a lot better by kernel 2.6 than by 2.4. My feeling is that you would do better trying to get the installer and your system working with the 2.6 kernel. Did you try my suggestions with linux26? You can also try sending us the logs from the failed boot (maybe someone will be able to make sense of the error), but getting them off the hard disk will require some creativity. The basic idea is to boot the installer, proceed until you get to partitioning, switch to vt2, mount /target and copy relevant log files from /target/var/log/ to floppy or over the network [1].
