[2] The ofonlyboot.img floppy finished loading, but I had to eject it with a paper clip. I was not prompted, but I inserted the root.img. There were no kernel messages scrolling, but eventually, the d-i dialog screen began. Install base system [E] Hope this is clear enough to _someone_. <brainfry> [3] A previous CD installation with this snapshot iso installs vmlinux-2.6.7-powerpc (with no choice), rather than the 2.6.8 on the floppy. I'm not sure exactly which kernel is used for the floppy's base installation, (it was late) but before I got that very welcome kernel choice, a dialog warning appeared saying no modules were found to match the kernel. Huh?? I had selected the default, "testing", when configuring apt. (I had earlier gotten a "bad mirror" error after my first choice, debian.uchicago.edu, and changed mirrors.) After the kernel modules error message, I returned to the main menu, reconfigured the debian mirror to "unstable" and _presto_ was able to continue without further incident. I just discovered that these mirror/version changes did not remove the previously selected mirrors from /etc/apt/sources.list. Look ... /etc/apt/sources.list #deb file:///cdrom/ sarge main deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux testing _Sarge_ - Official Snapshot powerpc Binary-1 (20040920)]/ unstable contrib main deb http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb-src http://mirrors.kernel.org/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb http://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb-src http://debian.uchicago.edu/debian/ unstable main non-free contrib deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-free Hey! CD reads "testing _Sarge_ ... unstable." Intuition, not experience tells me this list isn't good, but the system seems "stable" (get it?), even after a dist-upgrade in this state. Smarter heads than mine must have a plan. </brainfry> Install boot loader [4] background - I had used BootX to install from the same CD on the same box, and d-i said it was installing quik boot loader, but no progress bar; it quikly ;) bounced me back to the main menu, and there was no message that it had installed successfully. (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=273986 ) This installation, we have progress bar, success message and configuration, even a warning that Open Firmware changes might require one to zap the PRAM. The saga continues with quik; however, because I'm still reading how and haven't booted without BootX. But thanks to the successful quik configuration, now I have mac-centric /proc/device-tree to learn on. Thanks for powerpc d-i improvements, all!
