Package: wget
Version: 1.8.2-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

Consider this portion of a wget log file produced by directing
wget to download multiple files from the same directory,

    07:05:57 URL:
ftp://ftp5.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.7-RC2/HARDWARE. TXT [1846]
-> "4.7-RC2/.listing" [1]
    07:06:01 URL:
ftp://ftp5.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.7-RC2/INSTALL.T XT [1846] ->
"4.7-RC2/.listing" [1]
    07:06:05 URL:
ftp://ftp5.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.7-RC2/README.TX T [1846] ->
"4.7-RC2/.listing" [1]
    07:06:08 URL:
ftp://ftp5.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.7-RC2/RELNOTES. TXT [1846]
-> "4.7-RC2/.listing" [1]

According to my reading of this log file, wget is downloading the
same directory listing multiple times, ie, once for each file that
is to be downloading.

This behavior is "acceptable" when the directory in question
contains a small number of files, but for a directory containing a
large number files, this is not acceptable (at least to me it's
not!).

For example, if I want to download say 50 binary packages from the
FreeBSD packages directory, which contains 6500 files * 70
bytes/file = 455000 of unnecessary overhead per file to be
downloaded, not including the networking overhead.

If you want to downgrade this bug severity from normal to
wishlist, it is okay with me, but I see this behavior as so
deviant, that to me it is not a wishlist.

I am familiar with the wget-1.8.x TODO and with Debian bugs #32353
and #34042, but they refer to network connections, which to my way
of thinking, is orthogonal to re-using a directory listing.

Of course, the best use of resources in this case is to reuse both
network connections and directory listings.

Thanks,
