I clearly remember you having this issue on IRC. Unfortunately, I'm not able to
reproduce it anymore (I had it once as well, but can't remember the overall
environment).

I've just done:

# apt-get install xpn=1.0.0-3
[..]
$ xpn
[added two groups, just for the sake of a test]
# apt-get install xpn
[updates xpn from sid]
$ xpn

'freenews.netfront.net', 'David Paleino']
Recovering Group: ['it.comp.os.linux.sys', '141271', 'freenews.netfront.net',
'David Paleino']
[xpn starts]
$

It seems like something was very wrong in our environments at the time we
tested it together, or probably something biased the upgrade of xpn.

Closing the bug, please anyone feel free to reopen if you encounter the same
issue.

Kindly,
David
