Package: spamassassin
Version: 3.0.3-2
Severity: normal

My /etc/default/spamassassin :
ENABLED=1
OPTIONS="--create-prefs --max-children 2 -D -v -u vpopmail"
PIDFILE="/etc/spamassassin/spamd.pid"

I enabled debug, and in my mail.log I have:

Jul 20 15:24:05 spamd[25278]: connection from localhost [127.0.0.1] at port
44320
Jul 20 15:24:05 spamd[25278]: logmsg: Creating default_prefs [Error: unable to

Jul 20 15:24:05  spamd[25278]: Creating default_prefs [Error: unable to

Jul 20 15:24:05 spamd[25278]: debug: using "Error: unable to

Jul 20 15:24:05 spamd[25278]: debug: mkdir Error: unable to

switch at /usr/share/perl/5.8/File/Path.pm line 150, <GEN62> line 2._ No such

Jul 20 15:24:05 spamd[25278]: Cannot write to Error: unable to
setuid/.spamassassin/user_prefs: No such file or directory
Jul 20 15:24:05  spamd[25278]: logmsg: Couldn't create readable default_prefs

Jul 20 15:24:05  spamd[25278]: Couldn't create readable default_prefs for
[Error: unable to setuid/.spamassassin/user_prefs]
Jul 20 15:24:05  spamd[25278]: debug: read_scoreonly_config: cannot open
"Error: unable to setuid/.spamassassin/user_prefs": No such file or directory
Jul 20 15:24:05 spamd[25278]: debug: user has changed

So --create-prefs, -v, -u vpopmail don't work, spamassassin doesn't create or
read vpopmail user preferences files

Actually, it seems your problem lies with your vpopmail. SpamAssassin
relies on vpopuser -d returning a directory, and instead it's
returning "Error: unable to setuid/.spamassassin".

If you're using qmail-scanner, it could be it's not sending a user
probably.

I really don't know much about this, I'm just passing information on.
