Package: laptop-mode-tools

Severity: grave

Justification: causes non-serious data loss
The standard setting of "1" for BATT_HD_POWERMGMT correspondends to
"aggressive power management" (HDPARM(8)) and spins down the hdd too often.
This can damage hdds.
I ask you to put a saver default there like
BATT_HD_POWERMGMT=127

I have discussed this with the original maintainer and am inclined to conclude
that the current default settings are sane.
BATT_HD_POWERMGMT is for the HDD Power Savings (-B) and not really for the
spin down.
The spin down is controlled by (-S) and the LMT settings for it are:
# Should laptop mode tools control the hard drive idle timeout settings?
#
CONTROL_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT=1
#
# Idle timeout values. (hdparm -S)
# Default is 2 hours on AC (NOLM_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=7200) and 20 seconds
# for battery and for AC with laptop mode on.
#
LM_AC_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=20
LM_BATT_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=20
NOLM_HD_IDLE_TIMEOUT_SECONDS=7200
On AC it is 2 hrs and on BATT it is 20 secods, which I think is a sane
default.
Am closing this bug report. If you need to discuss it further, please feel
free to re-open it.
Regards,
Ritesh
