from a "screen" window, I get many GConf errors:

and so on. I don't know whether the culprit is gconf2 or dbus...
In the "screen" session, I have:

otherwise. IMHO, any method based on the environment (except DISPLAY,
which doesn't change in general) is broken because the environment
isn't something global.
