Can debian/rules access version information from changelog
in some Makefile variables set by dpkg-buildpackage? DPM
and the man page don't tell, afaics.

Version information would be helpful for generating code
or files at build time (using *.in files), or to pass additional
information to upstream's build procedure.

dpkg-buildpackage won't set anything for you but you can include
/usr/share/dpkg/pkg-info.mk in debian/rules

(What is DPM?)

If you know a good place where we should mention the existence
of those include files in /usr/share/dpkg/ please let me know.

Cheers,
