Package: galeon
Version: 1.2.5-0.woody.1
Severity: normal
If I use gconftool to change the User-Agent setting so that a remote
site sees galeon as Netscape 4 or IE 5.5 galeon refuses to start with
the following message:
INTERNAL ERROR on Browser End: Expected a version > 5! Version = 4
Clearly galeon is using this setting internally in some way other than
simply changing the User-Agent header sent to remote sites.
>From my experience re-setting the User-Agent header with a proxy
server, most sites that insist on a Mozilla version number of 4 or
earlier work perfectly well with Mozilla 5 and Galeon so it isn't
necessary for galeon to be able to emulate an earlier version, just to
be able to lie about it's version to the remote side.
Therefore I think any internal version control should be divorced from
the User-Agent header - if someone wants to set the user-agent header
to "The cat sat on the mat" then galeon should sent exactly that and
not protest.
